The Team Santa Cruz FSA Frenchman hopes to claim the Italian circuit’s overall in Aosta Valley on Saturday, June 26th. “Looking forward to a spectacular race”
Internazionali d’Italia Series’ final stage, La Thuile MTB Race, is a promise of a great show, not only in itself but with the GC crown still open to so many options. On Saturday, June 26th, in La Thuile (Aosta Valley, Northern Italy), Italian prospect Simone Avondetto (Team Trek-Pirelli) will try to defend the lead he took over in Val Casies from the attack of Maxime Marotte, one of the XC top riders throughout the last decade.
The Team Santa Cruz FSA 34-year-old athlete will be among the favorites after taking seventh place in the last UCI World Cup round in Leogang (Austria). “I look to the overall win, I have never won the Internazionali d’Italia Series classification so it would be a pleasure to grab this one. La Thuile MTB Race will be the end of my training block before the UCI World Cup round in Les Gets and the French National Championships“, said the rider from Mulhouse.
Avondetto (64) and Marotte (63) are in prime position to contend, but Val Casies’ winner Gerhard Kerschbaumer is not far in the ranking with 56 points – and double scores up for grabs in La Thuile. Nevertheless, the Italian has still to confirm his participation in the Internazionali d’Italia Series’ finale. In either case, Marotte predicts an entertaining race: “La Thuile is one of the best track I have ever ridden, very technical and demand tracks enjoyed it a lot in 2019. In case of rain, this one could be a very big challenge”.
Marotte’s Italian campaign for the season won’t be over after Internazionali d’Italia Series, as he’s expected to take part in the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Val di Sole from August 25th to 29th.
“After racing in Le Gets and at the Nationals, I will start preparing for the Val di Sole World Champs. I will not race at the Olympics unfortunately, but this provides an opportunity to shine at the Worlds” – Marotte explained. – “Internazionali d’Italia Series’ stages were a good test, even more this year because we had top-level athletes. We need more competitions like these, more options to compete with the top riders also outside the World Cup rounds“.
La Thuile MTB Race offers two days of action. On Saturday, June 26th, the Internazionali d’Italia Series competitions will take place: Men’s UCI Junior Series at 10.30 CET, Women’s Open race and UCI Junior Series at 12.30 CET; Men’s Open race at 15.00 CET. On Sunday, June 27th, the youth competitions will end the program with Men’s Cadets at 10.00 CET, Women’s Cadets and Rookies at 11.00 CET, and Men’s Rookies at 13.30 CET.
