The Capoliveri Legend XCO show began in the sky above the Elba Island, clear on a perfect day, and continued on the track charted by Enrico Martello, inaugurated by the challenge of the Junior Men. As it happened in Andora, the flag on the first step of the podium was not the Italian one.
After an outburst from Filippo Agostinacchio (Scott-Libarna) on the launch lap, then joined by Marco Betteo (Racing Team Rive Rosse) and Matteo Siffredi (Scott-Libarna), Swiss Nils Aebersold (Roland / Trek Bike) managed to recover a gap of 30 seconds to take the lead at the start of the second lap.
Class 2004, the son of Niki Aebersold, a solid road professional at the turn of the new millennium, imposed his own pace without looking back, outdistancing his opponents one by one – Agostinacchio being the last to give in – until he won the first edition of Capoliveri Legend XCO after almost three laps in solo fashion. Agostinacchio (+ 0:32) could be content with second place and the category Internazionali d’Italia Series leader’s jersey, while Betteo came in third (+ 1:03).
Aebersold is a multidisciplinary talent like many of those breaking out on the world scene: Nils is Swiss national junior champion in cyclocross, winner of the EKZ Cross category circuit in 2021, and in 2020 he was Swiss national champion in his category both on the road and on the track, in the omnium specialty. Thinking of another multitalented son of art is almost inevitable…
“Mathieu Van Der Poel is a huge talent, a real motivation for all of us youngsters, but if I have to choose a sporting idol, I always think of my father. Meanwhile, today I enjoy this great success in a truly spectacular location and track.“
