Internazionali d’Italia Series’ stage 2 was presented in San Marino, crossing national borders for the first time. The San Marino Cycling Federation said: “It’s a long-term project: we aim at improving”
The emotion of the debut, matched with a skilled organizing body and a long-term project. The Republic of San Marino is ready for the show of the international Mountain Bike. Today, Thursday, April 12th, at the Museum of Rural Life and Traditions of the Republic of San Marino, the San Marino Cycling Federation has presented the first edition of Titano XCO, a Cross Country race which is valid as the second stage of Internazionali d’Italia Series, scheduled for Sunday, April 22nd in Parco del Montecchio in San Marino.
Marco Podeschi (Secretary of State for Education and Sports), Gian Primo Giardi (President of the San Marino National Olympic Committee), Valter Baldiserra President of the San Marino Cycling Federation, the athlete Luca Braidot and Alessandro Stacchini (President of the Organizing Committee) were attending the press conference presenting the event – which represents the first stage crossing the Italian borders in 17 editions of the Internazionali d’Italia Series.
“We are glad to collaborate with a famous circuit such as Internazionali d’Italia Series – stated Stacchini, vice-president of the San Marino Cycling Federation. – It is an undoubtable chance to grow as organizers and as Federation. And we do not want to stop here: our ambition is to level up”. The words of the leader of the organizing committee of Titano XCO were echoed by President Baldiserra, who stressed: “we have focused strongly on Mountain Bike, our project is a long-term one. Our goal for the future is to organize an event ‘hors categorie’, hoping to further strengthen the collaboration with Internazionali d’Italia Series“.
For the first edition of Titano XCO the organizers have set up a very challenging route – not only from a technical point of view but also in respect of altitude – which will largely follow the one tackled in 2017 by the athletes of the Games of the Small States of Europe. “The route is very beautiful with some parts characterized by challenging hills and technical descents. It will be fun“, commented Luca Braidot, who tested the route in the morning. The circuit, which measures 4.2 kilometers with a difference in altitude of approx. 200 meters per lap, is for complete bikers: this means for bikers who are resilient, who can tackle steep hills and who are capable of overcoming technical pitfalls, first and foremost the “discesa dei tronchi” (descent of the trunks), one of the key parts of the race. “An excellent condition will be needed to win Titano XCO – added the biker from Friuli-Venezia Giulia. – I won the Italian Champion jersey in cyclocross this winter. Now I will try to secure some important results also in the Mountain Bike, starting from next Sunday in Nals during the first stage of the Internazionali d’Italia Series and continuing on the following Sunday in San Marino“.
Braidot is among the favourites for the second stage of the Internazionali d’Italia Series, but no competitor will be sitting and watching, such as the couple of Team Focus Selle Italia, formed by Andrea Tiberi and the U23 European Champion Gioele Bertolini. Among women, Lisa Rabensteiner (Focus-Selle Italia), Anna Oberparleiter (Lapierre Trentino) and the defending champion of the Internazionali d’Italia Series Serena Calvetti (KTM-Protec Dama) are taking part in the race.
“Despite being the first edition, Titano XCO can count on the important protagonists of Internazionali d’Italia Series – said Gian Primo Giardi, President of the San Marino Olympic Committee. – We hope that our movement can draw inspiration from all the Italian and international specialists. We want our quality to grow further and we invested in the Cross Country as the Olympic discipline of the Mountain Bike“.
The Titano XCO races have been scheduled as follows: on Saturday, April 21st the races for the Amateurs, organized in collaboration with the San Marino MTB Team, while on Sunday the competitive races for the Junior and Open categories (Elite and U23). A full-length live streaming of the men’s Open competition will be broadcast on the official channels of the race, with highlights of the women’s Open races, and of the men’s and women’s Junior races.
“These will be two amazing days for the sport in San Marino. Last year we organized the Games of the Small States of Europe and now we are talking about an international event that aims at growing further. I would like to thank all the people that are committed to ensuring the success of an event the Republic of San Marino is very proud of”, commented Podeschi, Secretary of State for Education and Sport.
The Titano XCO project is supported by the San Marino Olympic Committee and from the Secretariat of State for Sport of the Republic of San Marino. The project is an ambitious one, supported by partners such as Giochi del Titano, Titanka, Lauretana and San Marino Cycling Experience. Northwave, Shimano and Vittoria – three international brands in the world cycling – are the “main partners” of the Internazionali d’Italia Series, the main Cross Country event in Italy and among the most important in Europe, which on Sunday, April 15th in Nalles (Bozen) will live the first act of a spectacular season.
