The Italian team’s riders are the main favourites for the overall win. Tiberi leads the outsiders at Courmayeur MTB Event (June 2nd-3rd). Colledani to defend leadership from Bertolini’s assault in the U23 category
Teammates, and rivals just for a day: Team Bianchi Countervail’s Marco Aurelio Fontana and Stephane Tempier will put on an exciting “family duel” at Courmayeur MTB Event, on Saturday June 3rd, for the final crown of Internazionali d’Italia Series, the main Mountain Bike circuit in Italy.
The Aoste Valley awaits an entertaining race. Fontana’s flair against Tempier’s consistency: the latter is in great shape, as showed in the first World Cup stages in Nove Mesto (Czech Republic) and Albstadt (Germany), after a solid but unspectacular early season. “I had great feelings in the World Cup races that I hope will be confirmed in Courmayeur – Tempier said. – The goal for us as a team is to claim the title. I hope to recover well from a demanding weekend in Albstadt to achieve the best possible result”.
The Prorider’s season started in the best way, with success in the opening Internazionali d’Italia stage, Verona MTB International, ahead of teammate Tempier: in addition, the Italian biker preceded the Frenchman at Marlene Südtirol Sunshine Race in Nals. “Our goal is keep the GC jersey within the team, but I obviously want to win it myself – Fontana explained. “My athletic condition is good, but after two hard weeks the recovery will make the difference. It will not be easy to conquer the title: my opponents are strong and there are many youngsters out there who could surprise.”
Fontana 113 points, Tempier 100 points: this is how the top positions look like before the fifth round in Aoste Valley, that will award double points compared to the previous rounds. Team NOB Selle Italia’s Andrea Tiberi (72 points) still has a shot for the overall glory, whilst Jhonnatan Botero Villegas (KTM-Protek-Dama) and Gerhard Kerschbaumer (Torpado Gabogas) round out the list of outsiders in the event organized by Velo Club Courmayeur.
The men’s race will also see Nadir Colledani (47 points, Torpado Gabogas), winner last Saturday in Albstadt, try to defend Internazionali d’Italia Series’ U23 jersey from the assault of his main opponent, U23 Italian National Champion Gioele Bertolini (25 points, Team NOB Selle Italia).
Today, Friday June 2nd, Courmayeur MTB Event starts with the Team Relay Italian National Championships: the programme will open at 2,00 pm CET with the Rookies and Cadets categories, followed by Amateurs (3,15 pm), Open, U23 and Juniors (4,30 pm). 31 teams will take part in the event (21 youth, 7 Elite, 3 Amateur teams).
