Currently on a training camp in the Aosta Valley before Internazionali d’Italia Series finale, the South African is settling at the top end of the sport: “In La Thuile to open the second half of the season on a high”
Alan Hatherly has chosen the Aosta Valley as destination for his summer training camp, building up for a second half of the season featuring intense months and important goals. The Cannondale Factory Racing Team’s South African isn’t shy of thinking big, starting with Internazionali d’Italia Series’ season finale in La Thuile.
On Saturday, June 25th, Hatherly will take part in the Open Men’s competition at the UCI HC event in the Aosta Valley, a race that the 26-year-old born in Durban first learned about through the Internazionali d’Italia Series’ social media channels.
“Of course! I remember watching the live stream and Instagram videos last year and had some serious FOMO from home. Happy that it worked out for me to be able to compete this year”, explained Hatherly.
“It’s really exciting to be in La Thuile experiencing a new training venue. The days have gone by really quickly so far, and I still have plenty of places to explore. So far training is going great and I’m looking forward to the rest of my time here”.
Hatherly was strong in the first half of the season, collecting a number of solid results, including several in the UCI MTB World Cup races, leading him to the 4th overall position in the current standings.
“It’s a really exciting part of the season right now, doing some final preparations for the upcoming busy World Cup schedule. I’m in a good place with good energy and motivation for the World Cup overall chase”.
In Internazionali d’Italia Series’ final act, the first ever e-MTB World Champion (in 2019) will find Italian Cross Country at its finest, starting with Luca Braidot and the Italian National Champion Nadir Colledani, winner in Nals, where Hatherly had finished sixth.
“I’ll approach this race as I do with all the races this season – fighting for the win from the start. A podium finish would satisfy me but of course, but I’ll be aiming for more than that. It’s always a great opportunity to put a high-level race in, between two World Cup stages. This opportunity is even more unique due to its altitude, similar to Le Gets, the location of the upcoming UCI MTB World Championships”, concluded Hatherly.
The La Thuile MTB Race program spreads over three days: the Italian Youth XCE Championships will be held on Friday, June 24th from 16.00 to 18.00 CEST. Saturday, June 25th is dedicated to the Internazionali d’Italia Series events (Men’s UCI Junior Series at 10.30 CEST, Open and UCI Junior Series Women at 12.30 CEST, Open Men at 15.00 CEST).
On Sunday, June 26th, the XCO youth competitions will start at 09.00 CEST with the Rookie Men races, followed by Rookie Women races at 10.00 CEST, Cadet Women at 11.00 CEST and Cadet Men at 12.30 CEST. Rounding out the program will be the Italian XCE Championships in the afternoon, from 15.30 to 18.00 CEST.
