Junior Men in San Zeno: Romano Püntener dons first leader’s jersey

The Liechtenstein’s flag waves over Internazionali d’Italia Series stage 1 in the Junior Men category. On Sunday March 6th, under a pale sun on the Monte Baldo slopes, Romano Püntener (Thömus Akros Youngstars) secured the stage win as well as the first GSG leaders’ jersey. The young talent from Liechtenstein, already emerged in the second half of last season, came on top of a duel with Italy’s Marco Betteo (Scott Racing Team).

Püntener was the first to dig deep in the 2022 Internazionali d’Italia Series, trying to put the race on his own track early on. Marco Betteo had surrendered a few seconds, but eventually made up for it in lap 2 as the leader slowed down a bit, forming the duo that would have led the race until the very last kilometers.

Behind them, Pietro Mattio (Vigor Cycling Team) was the only other rider to stay within striking distance at first but was later reapproached by Nicolas Milesi (Ciclistica Trevigliese) during the fourth lap.

In the fifth and decisive lap, Betteo kept forcing the pace in the technical sections, but couldn’t find the way to respond to Püntener’s late move: the Liechtensteiner got clear to take Internazionali d’Italia Series’ stage one in San Zeno with a 7-second gap on the Italian. Milesi came in third (+ 1.36), fourt place for Carlo Cortesi (KTM-Protek-Elettrosystem, +1.50), fifth for Mattio (1.53).
